How To Take Control Of Your Life In 2013 (4)

This secret I am about to share with you in this piece can change your life permanently if you would receive it with an open mind and follow  carefully the instructions at the end of the article . It has been one of the priciest nuggets I got from my mentor that has produced the most outstanding result in my life.

I got to my financial mentor’s compound on Saturday at about 4 p.m. I found that he had replaced the scripture on his magnetic board with this one: “Thus saith the LORD, stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, we will not work therein”.

My mentor directed my attention to the quotation on the  board while he adjusted his seat to start the lesson for the day. By the way, the verse of the scripture was picked from Jeremiah 6: 16 in the Christian Bible.

“Now, let us get to the business of the day,” my mentor said as he shifted to the edge of his chair, signalling that the lesson was about to start.

“Today, I want to teach you one of the greatest secrets of millionaires which, unfortunately, many people have refused to embrace even though it is simple. I want to talk to you about mentoring (read coaching) and how, if you apply it correctly, you will gain incredible speed in your race to wealth creation.

“Let me ask you a question: when you see Mike Tyson throwing deadly punches and tearing his opponents down with devastating jabs, what do you think is the trick?” “Training of course,” I replied. “But did he train himself?” my Mentor asked. “No, of course, his trainer is at work,” I replied.

“Good! Every skilled footballer you see on the football pitch must have been drilled by a good coach. Every athlete who wants to be steps ahead of his peers sits at the feet of a good coach, receiving instructions which he can put to use. “But I am amazed that in business, and in other aspects of life, only few people attach themselves to coaches. When people want to start a business, for instance, they prefer to go it alone. Is it surprising then that such businesses plunge into tragic collapse shortly after take-off? A life that has no reference is a disaster waiting to happen. Many people have shipwrecked their careers due to failure to learn in a structured manner those who have achieved outstanding successes in their areas of endeavours.”

A good mentor holds you by the hand. I must commend your boldness in asking me for help on your journey towards wealth acquisition. Very few people do what you have done. A coach prevents you from making costly mistakes. He provides a sort of tested road map you can follow, just as the scripture on the boards suggests.  Attaching yourself to mentors increases your wisdom, builds your confidence and allows you to achieve peak performance with speed.

“Anywhere you are going or anything you want to get into, there is already an old path. Follow the path or hang on to the pathfinder. If you want to start investing in the stock market or in the real estate sector, locate the practitioners, those with proofs and attach yourself to them. The information you would get in one year from a successful practitioner of the trade you want to go into cannot be compared with 10 years of classroom teaching. If you want to start a business, before you spend any money, attach yourself to a practitioner of that trade and save yourself from costly mistakes.

“The beauty of it is that you can also learn from a mentor through books. Get his relevant materials and gobble it. That is the way to go, my friend.” The Christian Bible says that he who walks with the wise would be wise but a companion of fools would be destroyed. I can predict where you would be in future if you can show me the people you are moving with now and the types of books you are currently reading. I see young men dabble into what they are not experienced at and they just waste resources and time unnecessarily.  As you climb into the New Year, take an inventory of the people around you and do away with those who are not adding any value to you. Bring into your circle of influence mentors and coaches who can take you far in your journey. With good people around you, you can achieve far beyond your imagination in one year.

“Don’t let this year go without searching for a coach in your career area. Or more appropriately, look for an organised coaching programme and get yourself registered, no matter the cost. Three months with a coach will produce far more results than two years in the classroom of life trying to figure things out on your own. Your life is so precious that you do everything to make it count.  You are already in good hands with me as your financial mentor but don’t expect that I would be your cheer leader. My role is to shake you out of your comfort zone, if you would allow me.

“Many people are afraid to ask successful people for help, thinking that they won’t have time for them. I am confirming that that is not usually the case. What many people don’t know is that it is lonely up there. Truly, successful people are looking for people, to whom they can pass on their secrets, but they won’t come to you; you have to search them out. How many people know, for instance, that you can easily ask a millionaire out for lunch? Successful people want to give back to the system. But you have to make yourself worthy of their time.”

The rule of the game

“There are principles underlying a good mentoring programme. I am going to share a few of such principles with you today.”

Not all that glitters is gold. The first rule is that you must look for somebody who has achieved outstanding success in the area you want to try out, and beg to be coached by him. If you want to learn how to make money, attach yourself to a person who has acquired wealth the way you want to acquire wealth. It is that simple. It is surprising that many people pay good attention to the dresses they choose in a supermarket, but they are careless in choosing their mentors. Attaching yourself to unqualified mentors is as devastating and time-wasting as not having anybody coach you at all.

“Take, for instance, somebody who wants to learn to make money through investment, and he attaches himself to an investment adviser or a broker who barely can make ends meet. Of course, it is a matter of time before his or her money is gone. My advice is that you look for an adviser that has traded with his own money and has made a success of it. Anything other than this can have unpleasant results.

“I have observed that a lot of people are confusing mentoring with coaching. A mentoring relationship is a voluntary one where there are not necessarily binding rules but in a coaching arrangement, you pay to get quality guidance on mutually agreeable and enforceable terms. It is even better if it is a group coaching where you can interact with fellow wealth hunters, people who are going in the same direction with you. Someone once rightly remarked that the best way to miss a flight is to sit at the departure lounge with an individual who is not travelling. Both of you are likely to miss the departure announcements”

“Enough for today”

I thanked my mentor for the gesture.

I bade my mentor goodbye with a determination to put into practice the nugget he just share with me.
