Pad/Football: Aderibigbe Eyes Opeifa Trophy

A pad football player, Taye Aderibigbe believes that he is capable of emerging the champion of the ongoing Opeifa Lagos Pad Football championship.

Aderibigbe defeated Ogbeli John 3-0 in the semi final played at the Consort Hall, Agege, Lagos to book a place in the final.

Aderibigbe, who started playing pad football 10 years ago, boasted that having reached the final, his target is to become the champion. He admitted that it will not be easy to beat his opponent in the final, but thinks that good preparation and determination will see him through.

“I have been in this game for 10 years, and don’t think my opponent can defeat me in the final. I respect him for qualifying for the final, but I have what it takes to become the new champion,” he said.

In other matches, Ismaila Bello walloped Kolade Olamide 3-2; Adeyemi Micheal thrashed Idris Disu 4-1, while Daniel Ayelero humbled Segun Bello 2-0 in the last match of the day.

Bello, who struggled to beat his opponent, was happy to reach the final.

“I need to work hard and get prepared for the final because my performance in the semi final was not impressive. I believe that if I can work on my weaknesses, I can win the tournament,” he said.

The Chairman, Organising Committee of the tourney, Dipo Liadi said although, Pad Football is not as popular as soccer, table tennis and basketball in Nigeria, the sport has received support from some sports philanthropists and corporate organisations that are interested in the youth programmes in Orile Agege Local Council Development Area, LCDA.

Lagos State Commissioner for Transport, Kayode Ope-Ifa is sponsoring the competition.

Opeifa told P.M.News Sports that he is sponsoring the tourney with the aim of empowering the youth through sports.
