UNN honours Anyim, Jega, Adeola

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, on Monday announced the award of doctorate degrees to some top government functionaries and businessmen.

They include the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim, the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, the Chairman and Founder of Guaranty Trust Bank, Mr Fola Adeola, and Dr Alex Otti, the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive of Diamond Bank.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Bartholomew Okolo, announced the award in Enugu while briefing newsmen on the activities marking its 42nd Convocation.

Okolo said the university was honouring the personalities for their “remarkable contributions to the development of the country”.

He said the university would also present degrees and certificates to 18,150 graduates and 1,730 post-graduates, representing 73 per cent increase over the figure of its 41st graduation.

According to him, there are 116 first class graduates and 195 doctorate degree recipients.

Okolo said a former minister, Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili, would deliver the Convocation Lecture with the theme “The wealth and Poverty of a Nation: Who shall Restore the Dignity of Nigeria”.

On developments at the campus, the vice chancellor said the university embarked on intensive rehabilitation and recovery of dilapidated buildings.

He said the institution had also commenced installation of smart boards in 300 classrooms and laboratories to replace black boards.

“Similarly, we have developed an alumni online portal for fund raising, networking and electronic transcript delivery,’’ Okolo said.

He said all the courses offered by the university had been accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other professional bodies.
