Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson is facing disciplinary action by the Football Association (FA) after criticising a linesman for denying his side a penalty in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Tottenham.

An FA statement yesterday said the governing body had “contacted Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to ask him for his observations in relation to comments he made in the media following Manchester United’s draw against Tottenham Sunday.”

The top-seeded doubles team of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci upended  the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open early today.

The doubles match at Margaret Court Arena lasted two hours, 36 minutes and saw the Italian duo pull out a 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 victory over the 12th-seeded Americans, who are vying for their 14th Grand Slam doubles title together.

Serena, who will play her singles quarterfinal against Sloane Stephens on Wednesday, had her serve broken to go down 4-5 in the third set, but the Williams’ broke right back to tie the match.

Venus double-faulted on break point to give Errani a chance to serve out the match, and she did just that to reach the semis, where they will face the Russian team of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.

Meanwhile, Li Na advanced to the Aussie Open semi finals for the third time in four years, bringing fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska’s 13-match winning streak to a shuddering halt.
