INEC Pays N4.6m To Bomb Blast Victims

The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja on Tuesday paid N4.6 million to 46 victims of April 2011 bomb blast at INEC office in Suleja in Niger State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that each of the victims was giving a cheque of N100,000.

The INEC Deputy Director of Insurance and Due Process, Mr. Thomas Afanga, presented the cheques of Niger Insurance company to them.

NAN reports that 11 of the 46 recipients were members of the NYSC who served as ad-hoc staff during the April 8, 2011 elections in Niger.

The leader of the NYSC members, Dr. Ezeezuemeh Ethelbert, told NAN that the 11 NYSC members were grateful for the kind gesture as the money would go a long way to assist them.

Ethelbert recalled that during the presentation of N5 million each to the families of the NYSC, who lost their lives at the blast, President Goodluck Jonathan promised to give them automatic employment.

Ethelbert said months after the completion of their service there was nothing in sight.

He said all the affected corp members in line with the president’s instructions, forwarded their names to the then Director-General of NYSC, Maj.-Gen. Ismaila Tsiga, for automatic employment processing.

Ethelbert said most of the affected Corp members had not got a job.
