Music Is My Destiny, says Alox

By Nkrumah Bankong-Obi

Nigeria’s Hip hop music act, Samuel Osoh, a.k.a. Alox, has described music as his destiny, and says he is set to show the stuff he is made of in the competitive Nigerian music industry.

Osoh says he engaged in hair styling to earn a living and his role model is the African-American singer, Akon.

His choice of music, he says, is informed by the historical ties hip hop has with Africa. “It is a cultural thing. To me, music is culture. It has African roots and it appeals to a lot of people today. That is why it is still being celebrated and musicians like Tupac and others are still being celebrated. That is what gives me hope that I will find relevance doing Hip-Hop,” he told PM NEWS Entertainment Cafe.

Alox claims to have a diploma in engineering from a Nigerian polytechnic and explains that his brand of music is “modern hip hop”.

The musician also spoke about the frustrations of young talents in the music industry. The apparent lack of organisation, Osoh says, promotes dependence on godfathers. And for many like him who have no such support to pay their bills as well as give them the necessary push through the various levels of production in the industry, their work is perpetually threatened. “Upcoming artistes like me need help,” he says. “You need a godfather to get to the top; talent alone in Nigeria’s music industry is not enough. You need a good manager, and  marketer.”
