Police confirm attack in Kano

By Maduabuchi Nmeribeh/Kano

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG, in charge of Zone 1, Mr. David Olufemi Omojola, Thursday told journalists that some gunmen attacked a police station in Bunkure Local Government Area in Kano northern Nigeria on Wednesday night.

He told newsmen in his office that a wing of the police station was razed when the gunmen suspected to be terrorists threw explosives into the station.

A police source also confirmed to P.M.NEWS that a police sergeant and a corporal were killed during the incident.

“One of the wings of the police station was razed down when explosives were thrown at it,” Omojola said, adding that as at press time, he could not confirm whether the perpetrators were members of the Boko Haram sect.

Meanwhile, AIG Omojola has solicited for the support of Kano residents ahead Saturday’s by-election in Garko and Gaya state constituencies.

P.M.NEWS recalls that Danladi Isah Kademi and Abba Garko, representing Gaya and Garko constituencies in the state House of Assembly, respectively, were killed by Boko Haram members late last year.

AIG Omojola also told newsmen that already, at leas t23 people have been arrested as a result of violent clashes between supporters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP.

It was also learnt that the national leader of ANPP and former governor of Kano state, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau and ANPP stalwarts, including Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya and Kawu Sumaila, were attacked at Garko area Wednesday as they were going for campaign rally.

“There have been allegations and counter allegations by the two parties. I appeal to all supporters of political parties to conduct themselves well and allow electoral process to go through by supporting INEC and other stakeholders connected to the conduct of the council election.

“Under no circumstances should illegal gathering and fighting take place. I am warning groups planning to make trouble to stay clear. They should be law abiding and cooperate with police and other security agencies to ensure law and order,” Omojola said.

He said apart from officers from sister security agencies, at least 6,000 policemen would be deployed to ensure crisis-free election.
