Tinubu: APC Will Succeed
Nigeria’s major opposition party revved up efforts to ensure a seamless merger of their various structures on Monday as former Lagos State governor and national leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with a faction of Congress for Progressive Change, CPC led by Senator Rufai Hanga.
CPC is a major partner in All Progressive Congress, the new party formed by four leading opposition parties in Nigeria last week.
But the CPC has been riddled with crisis with former Minister of Information, Prince Tony Momoh leading the other faction of CPC. The CPC faction led by Hanga had dragged the Chief Tony Momoh-led National Executive Committee of the party to court, challenging its claim to leadership of the party. However, the intervention of the former Lagos Governor and the ongoing merger seemed to have succeeded in uniting the two factions.
Senator Hanga told journalists after the meeting that his faction will work to ensure that the merger was a success in the interest of Nigeria: “We are in court to challenging the legal status of the leadership, now with this merger there won’t be such leadership tussle again,’’ he said.
Tinubu told journalists that the meeting was in the interest of Nigeria and the newly formed APC: “We are meeting in the interest of our various objectives. To me, I am working in the interest of Nigeria, and particularly in the interest of APC, ’’ Tinubu said who added that all parties in the new political alliance are committed to ensure its success.
“It will succeed, our rivals will not want it to succeed, this is part of the political intrigues and environment in Africa, we will ensure its success in the interest of Nigeria. The parties involved in the newly formed APC are committed to make sacrifices in the interest of the country,’’ the former Governor added.
