President Ouattara: hospitalised in France

President Alassane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire was on Thursday elected by consensus as the Chairman of ECOWAS in the country’s political capital, Yamoussoukro.

Sixteen heads of states attended the 42nd Ordinary Meeting.

The Ivorian president was earlier nominated to the position on Feb. 17, in Abuja.

A communiqué issued at the end of the meeting said the Ivorian president had demonstrated good leadership in

handling the crisis in Mali and Guinea Bissau.

The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Desire-Kadre Ouedraogo said “the conference pays high respect to President Alassane Ouattara.

“We commend his effort and positive contribution in the search for peace in Mali and Guinea Bissau.The conference decided to re-elect the president as the chairman of ECOWAS for a new mandate of one year.”

He said the next meeting of the regional bloc would hold in Nigeria at a yet to be fixed date.

The 16 heads of states at the meeting were: President Goodluck Jonathan (Nigéria); Dicounda Traoré (Mali); Macky Sall (Senegal); Ernest Bai Koroma (Sierra Leone); Faure Gnassingbé (Togo) and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (Libéria).

Others are Alpha Condé (Guinée); Blaise Compaoré (Burkina Faso); Issoufou Mahamadou (Niger); Yaya Jameh (Gambia); Manuel Serifo Nhamadjo (Guinéa Bissau) and John Dramani Mahama (Ghana) .

The summit was also attended by host President, Alassane Ouattara (Côte d’Ivoire); Président Idriss Déby Itno (Chad); Pierre Nkurunziza (Burundi) and Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz (Mauritania).

The Republic of Benin and Cape Verde were represented by their prime ministers. (NAN)
