Rafael Nadal produced the most impressive display since his return from injury with a crushing 6-0 6-2 win over David Ferrer to clinch the Mexico Open title and the Spanish star is happy coming out of injury with a trophy to show for it.
Ferrer came into the final as the No. 1 seed and in search of his fourth successive win in the event, but he was simply no match for his fellow Spaniard.
Nadal had reached the final of the VTR Open and won the Brasil Open since his return from a knee injury, but this was viewed as his first serious test. That never actually materialised as Nadal won the first eight games in a display of awesome power and touch.
Nadal broke serve on five occasions and his movement around the court was impressive and did not look restricted in any way as he wrapped his 38th career title on clay.
“This was a great week for me and today I played exceptionally well, I dominated the game against the world No. 4 and couldn’t be happier, especially when I think where I am coming from,” Nadal said. “Perhaps the conditions were in my favour but I feel it was maybe one of the best matches of my career.”
Nadal will face Juan Martin Del Potro in an exhibition match on Monday before heading to Indian Wells for the first Masters event of the season. He had cast doubt on his participation in the event, but it seems as if he is leaning towards competing.
He said: “It’s a tournament that I love and one of the best events in the year. My knee responded well this week and I really hope it will continue this way.”
