LASU Crisis: Lawmaker Appeals For Peace
The Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Wahab Alawiye-King, has called on the management of the Lagos State University (LASU) to commence efforts to bring what he called “lasting peace” to the institution.
The lawmaker made the call while speaking with a group of journalists at the Assembly complex.
He said the current insecurity within the campus and its environ could have serious effect on the academic calendar of the institution, if not immediately checked.
A student of Banking and Finance in the institution and fast-rising musician, Damilola Olaniyan, with the pseudonym Damino Damoche, was killed last week at the school’s gate by gunmen on a motorcycle.
There has been report of reprisals since the incident occurred.
“We know the average student is always praying to complete his academic pursuit at the right time, but in a situation where insecurity becomes the order of the day, it may reach a situation where such calendar is hampered.
“I want to call on the students to remember that they have a future. If they continue like this, who will take over from us when we are old?
“We say the youths are the leaders of tomorrow, but how can they become leaders and take control of their country when they are not united?”
Alawiye-King further promised to bring up the issue before his colleagues for deliberation on the floor of the House for a solution that could help the school and its students.
