Global Foundation, an NGO, says it has spent N150 million in collaboration with the Niger State Government to procure NECO exams scratch cards for extra-moral students.

Alhaji Ibrahim Hussaini, the Secretary-General of the foundation, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna that the amount was expended in the last five years.

He said the state government procured the scratch cards while the foundation distributed them to its committed extra-mural students attending lectures and tutorials in 53 lesson centres spread across the state.

“No fewer than 50,000 extra-mural students have benefited from the scheme, which enabled them to re-write their final secondary school exams to make up for the deficiencies in their previous attempts.

“The lesson centres are manned by qualified teachers, who are prepared to make sacrifices towards ensuring that those who enrol at the centres pass their exams in flying colours for a token of N3,000 monthly stipends.

“The students are taught eight subjects at the centres, and these are English Language, Mathematics, Economics, Geography, Government, Chemistry, Physics and Biology, with English and Mathematics being the most preferred subjects by the students,” Hussaini said.

He said the foundation decided to intervene to raise more candidates to fill the slots allocated to the state in various universities, especially in the field of science.

According to the secretary-general, the programme would also enable the state meet its manpower requirement for growth and development.

He said the foundation started operating its lesson centres in 1997 through donations and the goodwill of wealthy individuals in the state.

“When Governor Babangida Aliyu noticed our good efforts, he directed the Ministry of Education to collaborate with us,” Hussaini said.

He said the foundation was also collaborating with individuals at the lesson centres which are named after them.

“This is by assisting in the payment of the allowances to the teachers, and offering their services as well as procurement of scratch cards for some students,” Hussaini said.

He appealed to philanthropists and organisations to complement the foundation’s efforts by providing more assistance to the students who had excelled in their exams to secure admission into tertiary institutions.
