DStv League: Warriors, Union Bank In Bright Start

Dodan Warriors and Union Bank of Lagos at the weekend were the biggest winners of the DStv-sponsored Nigeria Basketball League week one matches played  in the Atlantic Conference at the Indoor Hall of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.

Both teams began their league title chase in a commanding fashion as they recorded victories against Customs and Comets respectively in less than 24 hours.

Coach Peter Ahmedu-led Warriors outdunked the Customs boys coached by Scot Nnaji by 91-61 points in their first match played on Friday.

In the second match played on Saturday, the Warriors dominated the second half after an initial slow start in the first half  as they defeated the Customs boys 82-63 points.

Speaking after the match, coach Ahmedu, who only this season replaced former Warriors’ coach, Adeka Daudu,who is now the Technical Adviser of the team, praised his players for recording consecutive victories against a determined Customs team.

“I am glad were able to win the first two matches of the new season against a very determined Customs side. Our next match against the defending champions, Royal Hoopers in Port Harcourt is not going to be easy. We are going to give the players a day off and on Monday we will begin preparation for the next match,” coach Ahmedu said.

Union Bank’s back to back victories over Comets did not come as a surprise to pundits of the game. The Bankers, as Union Bank are popularly called by their fans, had a week ago defeated their city rivals by 76-43 points in a ceremonial match organised as part of the events to usher in the new season.

In the first points rewarding match played on Friday, the coach Ayinla Johnson-led Union Bank beat Comets by 48-66 points before wining the second match played on Saturday by 72-64 points.

While commenting on the successive defeats, coach Ayo Bakare of Comets said he did not feel disappointed with the performances of his players, saying that: “they are still young lads that are improving with every match they have played this season.”

Union Bank’s coach, Ayinla Johnson, commended his players’ duggedness in reeling out wins against Comets, who he said had always been a tough side against his team. He added that the back to back victories have put their target to finish among the top four teams in the league on course.
