CBN Open: Unseeded Star Upsets Mbanu
The first major upset at the ongoing Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Senior Tennis Championship was recorded early today when former junior champion, Onyeka Mbanu, fell in straight set of 4-6, 4-6 to an unseeded player, Emmanuel Sunday.
The second round tie which was supposed to be played yesterday had to be shifted to today as the heavy downpour prevented any match from being played at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos yesterday.
An elated Sunday, who had defeated Turkey-based Augustine Nwokedi in the first round, was quite ecstatic after the tie.
In other matches decided early today, it was a walk-over for Samuel Omoile against Peter Alakweim as the player refused to turn up for the tie, Clifford Enosoregbe spanked Chimezie Onyejiaka 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the third round of the tournament, while Nigeria’s number one player, Abdulmumuni Babalola would have to play his third round tie later in the day due to the delay caused by rain.
Meanwhile, wheelchair tennis action will start today. National Coach of the disabled sport, Frank Termena, expressed great joy at the reality of wheelchair tennis featuring in CBN Open.
This year’s CBN Open will be concluded on Saturday, 4 May.
