Following the killing of three people by gunmen, officials of the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Specials Offences (Enforcement) Unit have raided hideouts of suspected  criminals at Shitta area of Lagos, southwest Nigeria, demolished several shanties and recovered  some cocaine.

Two brothers and a pregnant woman were reportedly killed at Shitta area of Surulere on Thursday night, during a birthday celebration of one of the siblings.

Mufutau Akewusola, 27, who was the celebrant, his brother, Malik, 22 and a pregnant woman, Mrs. Raimot Balogun, who was said to be engaging in discussion with the owner of the relaxation spot were shot dead by gunmen, numbering about eight who stormed the area.

Following the incident, the taskforce officials, P.M.NEWS gathered, stormed Shitta estate this morning fully armed and immediately  demolished  illegal shanties suspected to be hideouts of criminals.

Hard drugs, such as marijuana and cocaine were recovered by the taskforce, while no suspect was arrested as they all fled the scene when they saw the taskforce officials. When contacted in his office to get details of the operation, Taskforce Chairman, Bayo Sulaiman, a Chief Superintendent of Police, confirmed the raid in the area, saying it was to complement the effort of the Lagos State Police Command that had been all out to rid the state of criminals. Sulaiman said some quantities of cocaine and lots of marijuana were recovered by the taskforce, saying that Shitta area had been known to be haven of criminals and hooligans for a long time.

“Our action is to support the police command in raiding the area. After the raid and demolition of shanties, the whole community is happy. There is a market in the area; we have warned the traders not to open their shops after 7.00 pm on daily basis,” he said.

The taskforce chairman stated that a police patrol team has been stationed in the area to ensure that criminals were not allowed to operate there.
