Governor Elechi's ADC escapes robbery attack

The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the attack on Gov. Martin Elechi’s Aide De Camp (ADC), DSP Ibrahim Tinja, by suspected hoodlums on Friday in Abakaliki.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Sylvester Igbo, told newsmen that the attackers attempted to rob the ADC of his official car, Toyota Camry with registration No. EBGH 178.

“As soon as the hoodlums swooped on the ADC, he brought out his service pistol swiftly and shot one of them,’’ Igbo said.

He said the shooting of one of the suspects made the others to run away, adding that the arrested suspect was receiving treatment at the Police Clinic, Abakaliki.

According to him, the police are making efforts to track the fleeing suspects, as a device which looks like firearm was recovered from the wounded suspect.

The arrested suspect confessed to newsmen that he committed the offence and attributed his involvement in the crime to poverty.

“I am a school dropout from Mbeke-Ishieke Boys’ Secondary School, as I just started robbery some months ago due to hardship,” he said.

Igbo also said that the police on May.2 arrested suspected cultists belonging to the Black Axe and Vikings confraternities during a fight among their members.

“The suspects are students of the Ebonyi State University as one of them escaped with machete-cut wounds,” he said.

He called on the people of the state to continue offering maximum support to the police by furnishing the security agencies useful information, among others.

“The citizens are also enjoined to be more vigilant and report suspicious persons and their movements to the police with the assurance that the reports would be treated with utmost confidentiality,” he said. (NAN)
