Nigeria’s consecutive defeats in the hands of Spain and Belgium on Monday and Tuesday respectively have ensured that the players will play no further part at the ongoing World Team Cup in Antalya, Turkey unless they win their playoffs match against a yet to be decided country.

The team made up of Uwazie Jude and Alex Adewale lost the first match on Monday against Spain without hitting a ball as the Spanish side walked over the Nigerian contingent due to the late arrival of the team to Turkey.

This was followed by a 0-3 defeat to Belgium on Tuesday as Alex Adewale lost in two straight sets 0-6, 0-6 to Joachim Gérard, while Uwazie Jude also lost 4-6, 2-6 to another Belgian, Gert Vos.

The Nigerian pair were later bundled out in the Men’s Doubles when they lost to Belgium’s Mike Denayer and Joachim Gérard, 0-6, 1-6.

Despite these defeats, President of Nigeria Tennis Federation, NTF, Engr. Sani Ndanusa is still hopeful that the Nigerian players can still make it to the next round of the competition in the Men’s Singles if they can win the playoffs.
