The police at Area ‘A’ Command, Campbell Street, Lagos Island, southwest Nigeria have arrested three robbery suspects and recovered three vehicles from them, while three others escaped after they robbed members of the public and traders of their valuables at Kakawa, Tinubu area of Lagos Island.

The incident, according to a police source, occurred when a police team led by the Divisional Crime Officer in charge of Lion Building Division, Lagos Island, DSP Baba Bumoni Adebanji, responded to a distress call from traders and residents of Tinubu Square, Lagos Island, that a 6-man robbery gang was robbing them.

On sighting the police team, members of the gang reportedly opened fire on the cops, but the leader of the police team was said to have restrained his men from firing back because of the huge human and vehicle movement in the area to avoid fatalities. The police eventually thwarted their operation.

While three of the suspects escaped through Idumota bridge, the three others who attempted to escape through Martin Street were arrested by the police at the back of Mandilas Shopping Complex inside their get away yellow colour taxi car.

Those arrested according to the police, were Segun Ottun, 38, Rafiu Jimoh, 35, and Enemona Stephen, 32.

Some of the robbery victims were also identified as Sikiru Bello, Yetunde Adeleke and Sylvanus Osimen.

Items recovered from the robbers, according to the police, include a caravan Chrysler bus with registration number  FS 774 APP, Toyota Sienna bus with registration number EKY 271 AA, Gold Jewellery valued at N152,000, one barretta pistol bearing number VII 2202, one pump action gun and one live cartridge.

During interrogation, the arrested suspects allegedly confessed that they are robbers who have been robbing Lagosians and snatching cars from them for the past two years.

After investigation by Corporal Adeyemi Tunde and his team, the suspects were arraigned  before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court on a four-count charge of armed robbery.

The offences, the prosecutor, Inspector I. Okeke said, contravened Section 297 295 (2) (a) 294, 1,2 (b), 404 of the criminal laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011, and Section 8, 27 (1) b (1) of the firearms act, cap F 28 laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

The plea of the accused was not taken as the lower court has no jurisdiction to try the matter.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs. Y.R. Pinhero ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody pending the advice from the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution, DPP, on the matter and adjourned the case.
