Nasarawa postpones council polls
The Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) in Nasarawa State on Wednesday announced the indefinite postponement of local government election in the state.
The commission had earlier scheduled the election for 14 December.
The state Chairman of the commission, Dr. Abdullahi Modibbo, disclosed this to newsmen after a meeting with political parties in Lafia.
He said the decision to postpone the exercise became necessary following the lingering insecurity in the state.
“We have been monitoring the situation for the possibility of conducting the election and based on our assessment, security report and concerns from various stakeholders, the exercise has to be postponed.”
He said conducting the elections under the present circumstances would further aggravate the already volatile security situation in the state.
According to him, a new date for the exercise will be announced when the situation improves.
He urged the political parties to bear with the commission, assuring that the electoral body would conduct free, fair and credible election devoid of rancour.
Modibbo called on the citizens to intensify prayers for the restoration of lasting peace in the state.
