Leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities of Ibadan, UI chapter, have cried out over threat to their lives.
The chairman of the UI ASUU chapter, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, in a press release titled “ASUU strike, Union leaders go underground,” said he had received calls warning him about his role in the strike.
He revealed that many of the union leaders’ telephone lines have been bugged, and now some of the striking lecturers live in fear of the unknown.
“Apart from the issue of finance, ASUU leaders are now being trailed all over the place. The majority of our union leaders have gone underground while many have their telephone lines bugged. Some are now living in fear for their lives,” Ajiboye said.
In a related development, the Faculty of Law at the University of Ibadan has defied the ongoing strike to conduct examination for its final year students.
The faculty insisted that the university needs to meet up with the Law School calendar.
Speaking about this development, Ajiboye said the university should have waited till the end of the strike before conducting the examination.
“We would appraise the situation after the strike and take appropriate action against erring members,” he said.
ASUU commenced the strike on 1 July, 2013 which has paralysed academic activities in Federal Government owned universities across the country.
The Federal Government and ASUU have been involved in a protracted negotiation for the past three months yet they have not reached a compromise to end the strike.
