Majeric, Jakupovic for Governor’s Cup Tennis final

The Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis on Friday recorded another upset in the first leg, holding at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.

Dalilia Jakupovic of Slovenia seeded eight, defeated the tournament’s number five seed, Romania’s Cristina Dinu in two straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.

However, Sloviakia’s Tadeja Majeric, the top seed, struggled to defeat the tournament’s number seven seed, Naomi Broady of Great Britain, three sets to one.

Majeric lost the first set at 3-6, before rallying to break the first serve of her opponent, Broady, in the second set, edging past her after a tie break.

The match, which lasted for about an hour, saw Majeric take the lead, winning the last set at 6-4. She wrapped the entire scores at 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4.

Majeric will later meet Jakupovic in the finals of the women’s category.

Meanwhile, Ante Pavic of Croatia, seeded five, ousted an unseeded, Andre Gasper Murta of Portugal, 6-2, 6-4 to qualify to the final.

An excited Pavic told NAN after the game that he prepared well for the game. “I was focused and determined to win.

“At this stage, I know it is not easy to play to win, but I told myself that I will make it.

“I played with all my might and kept myself in check for mistakes that I normally make. My mind set was positive when I won the first set,’’ Pavic added.

In the men’s doubles, Nigeria’s duo Sunday Maku and Lawal Shehu, defeated Jeevan Neduchezhiyan and Ranjeet Virali-Mugugesan of India, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.to qualify for the semi final.
