Estate Agent In Court Over Fraud

An estate agent, Aduni Olonade, 33, who allegedly duped an accommodation seeker of N115,000, on Tuesday appeared before an Abule Egba Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Olonade, who resides at 50, Unity Road, Aboru, Lagos, is standing trial on a two-count charge of obtaining by false pretences and stealing.

The prosecutor, Inspector Rachael Williams, told the court that the accused committed the offences on 11 April on Unity Road, Aboru, Lagos, western Nigeria.

Williams said that Olonade collected the money from Mrs. Bose Bello on the pretext of assisting her to secure an accommodation.

“The accused failed to provide the accommodation, and later told the complainant that she would vacate her own apartment by December for her to move into,” she submitted.

Williams said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Section 312 provides that obtaining by false pretences is a felony and a person convicted of it is liable to 15 years imprisonment.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Following the plea, the Magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, granted her N100,000 bail with one surety in like sum.

Elias adjourned the case till 13 November for mention.
