The Independent Electoral Commission in the northwestern state of Kano says the local government elections will hold on 17 May 2014.

The commission’s Chairman, Dr Sani Lawal, made this known at a press briefing in Kano on Wednesday.

Lawal said the date was aimed at giving the newly registered parties enough time to prepare for the election.

He said the date would enable the commission to procure election materials; meet with major stakeholders and conduct extensive voter education campaign.

The chairman said the commission would spend N1.5 billion for the conduct of the election, noting that the amount was inadequate because the exercise was capital intensive.

Lawal attributed the delay in the conduct of the election to the security challenges in the state, and warned political parties against violating the rules governing the exercise.

He reminded them that political thuggery in any form would attract severe penalty.

The chairman warned political party leaders and candidates to desist from pasting posters on government buildings and places of worship because it had been outlawed.
