The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) on Friday in Abuja said it would soon commence massive road rehabilitation to reduce road fatalities during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The Managing Director of FERMA, Mr Gabriel Amuchi, disclosed this at the end of the agency’s three-day training workshop for zonal coordinators and engineer-representatives nationwide.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the workshop is “Strategies for effective road maintenance’’.

“The workshop sought to address road projects’ quality, how to enhance quicker delivery and routine monitoring of projects to ensure specifications during and after the festive periods,’’ Amuchi said.

He also said the committee recently set up by the Federal Government to check the abuse of roads would further help to reduce accidents.

The FERMA managing director however called for media support in the campaign against road abuse to save the country’s highways from total collapse.

“The spate of road abuse has contributed greatly to the deplorable state of federal roads nationwide, and the media should help to educate the public against such habits,’’ he said.

Amuchi listed critical roads to be rehabilitated during the festive periods to include the Abuja-Lokoja road, and the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria road.

“Others are the Onitsha-Owerri road, Port Harcourt-Aba-Umuahia road and Benin-Onistha road, as well as the Ninth Mile-Oboloafor-Otukpo road and the Lagos –Ibadan road,’’ he said.
