Battered Wife Divorces Husband

The president of Agege Customary Court, Lagos State,  Mr. E.B. Shokunle, has granted divorce to a woman who had complained to the court that her husband constantly beat and maltreated her.

The eight-year old marriage between Mr Isaac Chika Ogonanya and Mrs Ogonanya, which produced no children, was dissolved due to the insistence of the plaintiff ‘s attorney for divorce.

The wife alleged that her husband abused her and  they had been living separately for the last five years after he forced her out of their matrimonial home.

The defendant was absent all through the court hearings.

The judge, after listening to the wife’s submission, ordered the dissolution of the marriage.

He said: “The union has broken down irrevocably and due to the evidence before the court I hereby dissolve this union”.

The court president stated that the couple can appeal after 30 days of the judgment.
