Captain of Team Nigeria to the International Table Tennis Federation, ITTF, World Junior Championship in Morocco, Olajide Omotayo has said that his target is to reach the semi finals of the tournament.
Omotayo is one of the three Nigerian boys that spanked their Moroccan counterparts 3-0 in yesterday’s match. Omotayo, who won the men’s singles of the 45th Asoju Oba Table Tennis Championship in Lagos last weekend beat Mohamed Bouzoubaa 11-5, 11-9, 11-8. Nigerian Azeez Ogunlade was too much for Said Sarbi in another match that ended 11-3, 11-3, 11-7, while Olasunkanmi Oginni defeated Mohamed Bouzoubaa 11-8, 11-8, 12-10.
Speaking after his match, Omotayo said: “We have trained hard for this tournament during a two-week camp at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. I think the secret of our victory is hard work.
“For me, my victory at the Asoju Oba Cup has given me a lot of courage on the table while playing at this ITTF World Junior Championships. I feel very happy playing in this championships because it is not an easy task for the team to qualify from Africa championships, so I am happy and very grateful to the president of the NTTF, Mr. Waheed Enitan Oshodi.
“My target in the singles event is to reach the semi-finals because players from the six continents of the world are playing in this tournament and a lot of them are very strong, fast and. better than us. This is the first time the Nigerian junior team are playing in the World Junior Championships. We never had this chance before because the federation in the past used to complain of lack of fund and sponsorship.”
