The Resurgence Of Boko Haram Attacks

Editorial

A few days after President Goodluck Jonathan assured Nigerians for the umpteenth time that the Boko Haram insurgency will soon blow away, the terrorists have responded with such ferocity that has left scores dead. The recent spate of deadly bombings in the usually volatile areas of the North is a mockery of the President’s assurances.

Yesterday’s bombing of a market in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, again brought home grimly the reality that the battle against the terrorists is not about to be won yet. The car bomb attack as usual, left scores of people dead, destroyed cars and caused panic in the city. Again it happened on Sallah day, a festive period that ought to be a day of joy.

Though the military personnel deployed to Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states, three strongholds of the terrorists, have been giving the insurgents a good fight, there is  more to be done to win the war. The people in these three states where President Jonathan had declared a state of emergency, need to assist the Nigerian forces to win the war. They should provide more useful information on the hideouts of the insurgents to the military personnel.

Gathering intelligence on the movement of the insurgents, their hideouts and when they plan to strike will go a long way in nipping their deadly attacks in the bud.

Nigerians have lost over 3,000 loved ones to the terrorists in the last few years. This cannot continue. The earlier the war on terror is won, the better for all the citizens and the economy of the states that have been ravaged by the senseless bombings by extremists.
