The Sokoto State Government, in northern Nigeria, says it has earmarked N5.63 billion for the sinking of 40 boreholes and another N1.9billion to upgrade three water treatment plants. Each borehole will cost N140.75 million.

The Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Shehu Tangaza, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto on Sunday.

Tangaza said the boreholes will provide additional 40 million gallons of water daily to parts of the city and it’s environ.

“We are presently providing 52 million gallons of water to the residents of the city daily.

“Upon the completion of these ongoing projects, the state water board will be providing over 92 million gallons daily.

“This will amount to 22 million gallons surplus as the demand currently stands at 70 million gallons daily,’’ he said.

According to NAN, Mana, Runjin Sambo, Mabera and Rugar-Wauru are the other areas to benefit from this intervention.

Tangaza restated the commitment of the state government to providing adequate potable water to the people.

The commissioner, however, urged consumers to pay their water rates promptly as well as guard against wastages, illegal connections and constructions of underground reservoirs.

“The residents should also guard against all acts of vandalism and report all faults promptly for repairs.’’
