2 hostels for female students razed by fire

Two female hostels at a secondary school in the northern Nigerian town of Kebbi, have been destroyed by fire.

The hostels at the Yauri Government Girls Science Secondary School in Kebbi, were gutted on Monday while the occupants were at the morning assembly.

Alhaji Garba Kangiwa, the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Science and Technical Education, told newsmen in Birnin Kebbi that no life was lost but that property belonging to the students were destroyed while the 400 affected students had been provided with alternative accommodation.

He said the source of the fire was yet to be determined, but that a burning cooking stove was being suspected.

“We will henceforth enforce the rule that bars students from cooking especially considering the fact they are being fed three times a day.”

The permanent secretary commended the Emir of Yauri, Alhaji Zaiyyanu Abdullahi, who donated N500,000 as relief to the affected students.

He said top officials of the ministry had visited the school to ascertain the the extent of damage.
