The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has rolled out plans to make sure Nigeria returns to winning ways in track and field in national and international competitions.
President of the AFN, Solomon Ogba says their programmes will clearly focus on the steps necessary to ensure continued national and international success across all sports.
The former Commission of Sports in Delta State harped on professionalism as a key tool to achieving success because the federation wants to move from being perennial under-achievers to being ranked amongst the world powers when it comes to athletics.
He further disclosed that the year is loaded with so many activities but the federation will try to ensure they accomplish all of it and achieve more for the country so as to put smiles on the faces of Nigerians through athletics.
“Our 2014 programmes are loaded but we will try to ensure we accomplish all of it and also achieve more for ourselves as a country because we need to run professionally so that we can move from being at a mediocre level to a pro performance level and that is why a performance status is being established,” he said.
He concluded that only athletes that fit into the federation’s policies and plans will be used to prosecute competitions so as to achieve desired results. He also stated that local athletes will be given the enabling environment to excel.
“We have the responsibility to feed the high performance system with athletes so we have devised means to feed the system with our best athletes locally.’’
