Police rescue kidnapped lawmaker, girl killed

A 10-year old girl was on Friday killed as police engaged kidnappers in a bid to rescue the abducted member of the Bauchi State House of Assembly at Rimin Zayan, Toro Local Government.

The member, Malam Yusuf Nuhu, representing Jema constituency was eventually rescued.

However, the 10-year old Hauwa’u Awalu, who was hit by a stray bullet during the encounter, died later in the hospital while receiving treatment.

Malam Haruna Mohammed the Police Public Relations officer of the state command confirmed the incident at a news briefing in Bauchi.

He said that the command received a tip from concerned citizens who noticed with suspicion, some people in Golf 3 vehicle coming toward Toro from Kaduna.

“Immediately we dispatched our men who manned a road block at Rimin Zayan. On spotting our men, the suspects opened fire and we engaged them in a fierce gun battle.

“After some minutes of exchange of fire, the suspects abandoned the vehicle with registration number MKR 553 AA and escaped into the bush with bullet wounds.

“On approaching the vehicle, we found the kidnapped law maker in the car and recovered five expended ammunition of 7. 62 mm,’’ he said.

He said that the lawmaker was in stable condition and urged members of the public to report anyone with bullet wounds to the nearest police station.

On March 3, the lawmaker was abducted by gunmen at his house in Zalau village.
