Court bailiff remanded in prison

A Nigerian Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abeokuta, Ogun state on Monday remanded the chief bailiff of the state High Court, Kehinde Olugbeni, in prison. He would stay in jail pending when his case would come up for hearing.

Olugbemi, 53, is charged with a two-count offence of fraudulent conversion and stealing. He pleaded not guilty.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Banji Sangotokun, told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in June 2013 at 3.00 p.m. at the court premises, Isabo, Abeokuta.

He alleged that the accused fraudulently converted an Ingersoll Rand/750 Compressor vehicle valued at N25 million to personal use.

Sangotokun said the vehicle which belonged to Casagrand Nig. Ltd was to be auctioned by the court.

“The vehicle was to be auctioned at the high court for N25 million. The accused, who had access to it, sold it off instead to one Kelechi Okparaeche at the rate of N4 million and converted the money to his own use.

“The sum of N3 million was traced to Olugbemi’s Guaranty Trust Bank account,” he said.

He noted that the offences contravened Sections 316, 383 (1), (2), (a) and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006. The magistrate adjourned the case to March 31 for further hearin
