Birmingham City owner Carson Yeung has filed an appeal against a money-laundering conviction that saw him jailed for six years, an official said Thursday.
The Court of Appeal has received the filing from lawyers representing the barber-turned-tycoon, a court official said.
No hearing date has been set, and the office of Yeung’s barrister declined to comment to AFP.
Yeung was jailed on March 7 following a high-profile trial that gripped both Hong Kong and fans of the second-tier English football club, revealing unexplained financial transactions and his links to an alleged triad member.
The prosecution showed that HK$720 million (US$93 million) passed through five accounts in connection with Yeung, involving “unknown parties without any apparent reason”.
Yeung resigned as chairman of Birmingham International Holdings, the parent company of the football club, in February.
He retains his control over the club through his shares in the firm, although a hearing is scheduled for next Thursday to determine whether any of Yeung’s assets can be seized under the conviction.
