The NDLEA in Ekiti state on Monday urged the authorities of tertiary institutions to ensure effective monitoring of their students.

The new Commander of the agency, Mr Suleiman Jadi, made the call when he paid a courtesy call to the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye, Prof. Isaac Asuzu.

He said many students in universities and polytechnics had been caught engaging in criminal acts, especially when in need of money.

Jadi also advised the institutions to empower their security officers to effectively monitor the activities of students indulging in smoking Indian hemp or illicit drugs.

He said many students now engage in drug peddling for survival on their campuses.

Jadi promised to deploy officers of the agency to institutions to organise seminars on drug abuse and cultism.

Asuzu, in his remarks, commended the agency for its concern over the safety of students.

He urged the NDLEA to organise seminars for both staff and students in order to educate them on the dangers inherent in drug abuse.

Asuzu promised to partner with the agency to achieve the desired objective of eradicating drug peddling among students.
