Proprietor’s son remanded over assault of female students

An Egor Magistrates’ Court in Benin on Friday remanded in prison custody, a 47-year old son of a school proprietor alleged to have indecently assaulted four female students.

The Chief Magistrate, Igho Braimoh, ordered the remand of Rotimi Olayebi pending the determination of his bail application.

Braimoh adjourned the case till 26 May for commencement of trial.

Olayebi, who lives at No. 3, Edosa Street, off Ariasowa Uselu Quarters, Benin, is facing a four-count charge.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Omoruyi Osayomwanbor, told the court that the accused committed the offences on 12 May at his residence.

Osayomwanbor said that the girls, aged 12 to 14, were students in the private school owned by the mother of the accused at Uselu in Egor Local Government Area of Edo.

The prosecutor said that Olayebi lured the students to his residence and indecently assaulted them by kissing and hugging them and fondling their breasts and private parts.

He said that the offences contravened provisions of Section 360 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Edo State. Section 360 prescribes two years imprisonment with or without caning, if the accused is found liable.

Olayebi, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
