Chibok Girls: Nigerian army is one of the best in the world – Gana

Prof Jerry Gana, a former Minister of Information, has assured Nigerians that its army is one of the best in the world. Gana also said that the Federal Government is doing everything possible to rescue the abducted students of Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno.

Gana, a delegate at the ongoing National Conference, gave the assurance on Sunday in an interview with newsmen in Minna.

He was speaking after attending the inauguration of Anglican Cathedral Church of St Peter built at the cost of N75 million.

He appealed to Nigerians to be patient with the Federal Government on the abducted students.

On the assistance of the international community to the Federal Government in tackling the insurgents, he said “this is not an indictment on our security forces.

“It is an international practice among the comity of nations.

“Our army is one of the best in the whole world; they did well in Congo, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mali and other places, so we should be proud of them and encourage them.”

He said that the National Conference had resolved to restructure the Nigerian army and police for better service delivery.

“Security and welfare of the people is the primary purpose of any government.

“Therefore, there are very serious resolutions coming from the conference on the restructure of the Nigerian army and the police,” he said.

He said the conference was making serious case to regenerate community policing in the country.

The former minister said the current police force is inadequate to police the country.

“We were told to our amazement that throughout the country, we have less than 400, 000 men in the Nigeria Police which is inadequate to a nation of about 170 million people.

“By the United Nations standard we should be having 6.5 million,” he said.

Gana also said that most delegates had agreed that the immunity clause enshrined in the 1999 Constitution be removed to ensure that leaders respected the law.
