Nigerians Want A Performing President

Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, Segun Olulade, has declared that Nigerians want more from their President.

President Goodluck Jonathan has been under increased verbal attacks for his alleged inability to bring peace and stability to the country and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Monday frowned at these attacks.

Olulade said: “What Nigerians want is a president that represents the sovereignty of this country; a president who guarantees peace and security; a president who is on same page with the people especially in difficult circumstance; a president who shares in the plight of the people rather than engage the masses on argument of blame-game over what  (the government) is responsible for. And I don’t think Nigerians are asking for too much from their president.”

Olulade, who was reacting to what he described as the defensive response from President Goodluck Jonathan to issues affecting the people most negatively, noted government’s inability to meet basic needs of the people, including guaranteeing safety of lives and properties.

“It is not only embarrassing but unfortunate that President Jonathan and his loyalists have continued to add insult to injuries of Nigerians by acting defensively whenever the people express their opinions over serious security issues.

“The likes of Labaran Maku and Doyin Okupe who have continued to blame everyone except themselves. In times like this, the government should not throw anything back at the people who already have a handful of agony and distress.

“The government rather than encouraging the people by working assiduously to solve pressing problems has engaged in exoneration game with its people; a situation too sad.

“I think there is an option in governance. The President can borrow a leaf from South Korea’s Prime Minister who resigned honourably in the face of people’s overwhelming loss of trust on him. Governance is about people and once the people have lost all confidence in a government, there is no point staying in power,” Olulade said.
