The Headies’ 9th Edition Kicks Off

Smooth Productions, one of Africa’s leading media and entertainment company, has announced the ninth edition of Nigeria’s biggest annual urban and hip-hop culture awards, The Headies.

Organisers revealed that the live premiere of the prestigious awards will hold on Saturday, 25 October and have opened its doors to receive music materials for nomination for the awards.

Only music materials released between July 2013 and June 2014 qualify for entry, and the process opens 22 July and closes 30 August.

“There is no better way to reward these deserving artists where they are not only appreciated by their country, but also celebrated on a platform aligned with international brands. The honour of receiving this prestigious award in their country, that is recognized on an international level, is one of the many things Smooth Promotions aims to achieve with this years organization of The Headies,” said Ayo Animashaun, CEO, Smooth Promotions.

He added that The Headies committee has put together exciting activities to elevate the brand and Nigeria’s growing music industry within the international spectrum.

As anticipation builds, organisers of the awards are yet to reveal this year’s noteworthy hosts, nominees and special artiste performances.

Last year, the dynamic duo of Tiwa Savage and Dr SID opened the awards ceremony to much acclaim and for the first time, The Headies introduced a new category – The Best Alternative Song which shed light on new exciting contenders.

The Headies, since its inception in 2006, has recognized the distinguished achievements of artistes and entertainers in a number of categories, including Rap, RnB, Dancehall and Alternative.

This makes it the biggest event on Nigeria’s entertainment calendar, broadcast live to over 10 million viewers in Africa and beyond.
