Insecurity: NURTW, Worshippers Introduce Security Measures

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Yobe on Monday said it had introduced thorough screening of passengers and luggage in all motor parks across the state.

Alhaji Hussaini Ibrahim, state chairman of the union, told newsmen in Damaturu that the exercise was aimed at fishing out suspicious characters and parcels in view of the prevailing security situation in the state.

The chairman appealed to passengers to cooperate with the union to guarantee their safety and that of their belongings.

“We appeal for support, cooperation and understanding from passengers for our collective safety.

“We also advise passengers to patronize vehicles in the motor parks for their personal safety and to report suspicious persons and goods to the authorities” he said.

He also appealed to the state government to assist the union with screening machine and equipment to ensure effective screening of the passengers.

Meanwhile, communities in Damaturu have introduced some security measures around mosques during prayers to ensure the safety of worshippers.

NAN reports that parking of vehicles or tricycles close to mosques have been forbidden, just as bags are no longer allowed into mosques.

In addition, strange worshippers are being closely monitored to ensure that nobody enters the mosque with an ulterior motive.

NAN recalls that two mosques were attacked in twin bomb blasts last week in Potiskum  town of Yobe, resulting in the death of 13 worshippers and injury of over 30 others .
