Executive Support: Akpabio Sponsors U-18 Tourney In Uyo

Grassroots Sports Federation inconjuction with Akwa Ibom Ministry of Youth and Sports have concluded plan to organise 8th edition of Dr Godswill Obot Akpabio U-18 boy international football tournament.

The tourney is sponsored by Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Dr Godswill Obot Akpabio and it will kick off from 13 to 21 September at Uyo Township Stadium.

A member of screening committee, David Oliha Ochei disclosed to journalists in Lagos that the tournament has received the blessing of Governor Akpbabio saying that 36 states are expected to take part in the competition that will last for nine days in the state.

Ochei said the Governor Akpabio wants to sponsor the tourney so that more players will be discovered for the state ahead of zonal elimination of national sports festival sheduled for Calabar, Cross River in November.

Apart from this,Ochei noted that the compeitition will help the two clubs in the state such as Akwa United and Akwa starlet to discover new players for the next season.

“The people of Akwa Ibom state are happy about this competition because organisers will discover some players that may represent the state in the future national football competitions,” he said.

Ochei revealed that the cup donor has promised to give a sum of N1.5million with a giant trophy to the winners,while the first runner up will go home with N1million as third position will pocket N750,000.

According to him,all the 36 states are expected to receive consolatory prize for their participation at the end of the competition.

Ochei thanked the sponsor for his contribution to the football development in the state and urged other corporate bodies to contribute their own quota to sports development the state.
