The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu, said on Monday that 1, 600 jobs would be created at the completion of the Eastern Line of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).
Wogu gave the assurance at the flag-off of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme’s (SURE-P) Technical Vocational Education and Training Project (TVET) in Lagos for the newly recruited staff of the NRC.
The two-month capacity building training programme is meant for new staff members along Western Line corridor, covering Lagos to Kano.
Wogu also said more than 1, 800 jobs would be created in the corporation at the end of the training service holding at the NRC’s Training Institute in Ebute Metta, Lagos.
“The sustainability of the operation of the railway system depends largely on the quality of manpower recruited to power it.
“We are happy to announce to you that 1,805 job spaces would be filled at the end of this exercise.
“Another 1, 600 jobs are expected to be created when the eastern line is rolled out.
“This is for professional engineers and technicians along the Port Harcourt – Maiduguri railway section,” the minister said.
According to him, the ministry has made remarkable impact in creating wealth for young Nigerians.
“In my ministry, we have also made impact through the activities of the community service youth employment programme, and technical vocational education and training project (TVET).
“We have made impact in areas such as renovation of eight technical vocation training centres in different parts of the country for different trade,” he said.
