Nasarawa State Government on Wednesday said it had registered over 11,000 cooperative societies in the state as part of efforts to boost socio-economic activities in the country.

Danlami Jacob, Director of Cooperatives at the Ministry of Commerce, Industries and Cooperatives, disclosed this to NAN in Keffi, Keffi local government headquarters of the state.

He said that cooperative societies were vehicles for the socio-economic development of any society.

“Our department in this ministry is saddled with the responsibility of organising, supervising and promoting the activities of cooperative societies; we are doing our best to ensure that cooperative societies function effectively in the state.

“Our department had so far registered over 11,000 cooperative societies in the state, but out of this number only 9,000 cooperatives are fully functional in the state.

“The State Government had built and allocated shops to traders in Karu International Market and in Lafia Modern Market,” Jacob said.
