Nurudeen Akinpelu Aina a legislator representing Ado Odo\Ota 1 in Ogun state, House of Assembly said there are no plans to impeach Governor Ibikunle Amosun. He disclosed this in an interview with TheNews magazine.
He said even though the wind of impeachment is blowing across the country, he thinks that Ogun state should be exonerated, adding that, the issues on ground do not call for the removal of the governor.
Nurudeen then questioned critics and those clamouring for his removal. “Why should he be removed? What has he done? Look at the level of development he is embarking upon. So what is his offence? The issue of impeachment is something they should not bring near the border of our dear state. What will want now is progress and peace”.
He then argued that it is illegal for any House of Assembly to impeach the government unlawfully. “A government that is elected by the majority of the people would now be removed by just few people sitting illegally, not following the due process is uncalled for.
He added that: Of course there is provision for impeachment in the constitution, but we should not misuse it. We should not apply it wrongly. We should not abuse it,” he said, adding that, “If there is need to impeach a governor it should have been based on genuine intent not a mischievous level.”
Nurudeen also spoke on plans to impeach the Speaker of the House, noting that, it was just a rumour, “What happened was that some members were suspended. There was a process on ground to suspend some member for their un- parliamentary conduct and of course, the suspension took place. But they are now revolted against that suspension”.
He further said “Whoever says the speaker was impeached is not saying the truth. It was after we left the chamber that some people forced their way into the hallowed chamber to sit without the mace. So, for me, the Spaeker was never impeached, not even for a second.”
He noted that the matter has now been resolved. “No more problem now. That I can confirm”.
