Over 500 traffic offenders are arrested monthly for various traffic offences in Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as part of efforts to maintain sanity on the roads, according to an official of the FRSC.

Mrs Susan Ajenge, FRSC Sector Commander in the territory, made the disclosure on Wednesday in Abuja in an interview with NAN.

She pledged that the commission would not relent in its efforts to ensure that motorists abide by traffic rules and regulations to protect their lives and the lives of other road users.

“There are rules guiding the conduct of motorists and other road users so that our roads will be free of accidents that kill and maim many people in the territory.

“Some motorists refuse to obey basic rules like use of safety belt by drivers and passengers in front of vehicles. Some drivers also use mobile phone while driving.

“Those things are wrong; that is why our men are going round to apprehend offenders and make them account for their actions.

“Our command will continue to monitor compliance of motorists to traffic rules to ensure that safety is adhered to at all times.

“The commission punishes offenders through various means which include payment of fine, impounding of vehicles and some even get imprisoned for certain traffic offences.”
