The Labour Party on Wednesday commended the Federal Government for consistently protecting the territorial integrity of the nation in spite of the security challenges by insurgents.

This was contained in a communique read by Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, National Chairman of the party, at the end of its 18th National Executive Council Meeting in Abuja.

According to Nwanyanwu, efforts of the government to contain the insurgency and Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the country have been yielding positive results.

“The insurgents’ efforts to take over certain parts of the north-east of the country have always met with resistance of the government troops.”

Bama community in Borno was recently reclaimed by the government troops which is an indication of government’s commitment to protect its territorial integrity.

“We are hopeful that the government troops would soon reclaim other parts that the insurgents are still dominating in the zone,” he said.

The party, therefore, urged the United Nations to help ending the insecurity and poverty challenges in the country.

On the EVD, the party also commended the Federal Government and Lagos State for the fight against the disease.

The party also urged the federal and state governments to continue to increase funding of the health sector so that EVD and other diseases would not spread across the land.

On the party’s National Convention, the Chairman said the NEC had fixed 4 October for its convention at Akure.

The outgoing chairman said he would not be contesting any position in the election.

“I have spent more than 10 years as the National Chairman of this great party (LP) and I believe this has not been preceded by any party chairman in the country.

“It is on this note I have decided not to re-contest in the election even when the party constitution still allows me to do so,” he said.

Nwanyanwu added that founders of the party, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), would be more involved in taking the affairs of the party to a greater height.

The meeting was attended by Gov. Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, NLC and TUC executive members, among others.
