At least five Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, AIGs, will be due for retirement this year, although unofficial sources aid 10 of them would be due for retirement between this September and the end of the year.

Emmanuel Ojukwu, the Force Public Relations Officer, confirmed to P.M.NEWS Friday that only five AIGs would be due for retirement.

Responding to a text message, Ojukwu said: “From our records only five AIGs are leaving service this year. They are leaving honourably after meritorious service to the fatherland. I am not aware of any of them seeking extension of service.”

His reaction followed our correspondent’s request to confirm the speculation that one of the AIGs who would be due for retirement on 28 September this year has asked for extension of his service by two years and the request has allegedly been granted by the Police Service Commission, PSC.

Former Inspector-General of Police and Chairman of the PSC, Mike Okiro, did not respond to the text message sent to him on the issue, particularly the alleged granting of extension of tenure to the AIG from the southwest and said to be close to a leader at the National Assembly who allegedly influenced the tenure extension.

Sources said if the AIG from the southwest eventually has his way, others due for retirement would also seek extension, which is against the Civil Service Rule.

AIGs who would have lost out are those retired recently along with the former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar as they could not benefit from the alleged extension of tenure despite lobbying for it.
