A pregnant housewife, Bola Shakiru has been arrested by the police for attempting to poison her neighbour and members of family by pouring her urine into drinking water in Lagos state, Southwest, Nigeria.
The 28-year old allegedly broke her neighbour’s (Mary Chijoke) window and poured urine that she had allegedly kept for three days into their drinking water.
Her plans to poison Mary failed when one of their neighbours saw her and alerted the victim. The incident which happened at 10 Sanusi street, Ejigbo, caused an uproar leading to the arrest of Bola.
She was handed over to the police at Ejigbo division and was charged before Ejigbo Magistrate’s court for the
alleged offence.
According to Mary, trouble started following a quarrel with the accused. She however said she left the house for shop afterwards.
She explained that on getting to the shop she realised that she had forgotten something at home and quickly dashed back to pick it but on getting home Bola had given her three children to eat, but the eldest collected the rice and hid under the bed.
When she returned, the eldest child, Blessing showed her the rice which she poured away after raising an alarm. This she believes led Bola to pour urine in her drinking water.
Bola who confessed to the police said she poured urine in the water because Mary had made her a subject of local gossip, bastardising her name and attempting to destroy her marriage.
She however said she wants the matter settled out of court but when Shakiru was arraigned, she pleaded not guilty.
The presiding Magistrate, Mr. P.E. Nwaka granted her bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety in like sum.
The matter was adjourned till 8 October 2014 for trial.
Meanwhile, Mary and her family has fled and relocated for fear that they can be attacked.
