The father of Ecuador’s vice president was sentenced to 20 years for raping a 13-year old girl, the prosecutor’s office said Saturday.

Jorge Glas Viejo, 74, was convicted on September 2 of sexually abusing the girl, who became pregnant, in 2011 when he was director of her school.

The vice president has remained outside the proceedings against his father, with whom he has a distant relationship.

Glas Viejo is currently hospitalized and will be transferred to a detention center for the elderly, where he will serve his jail term, local newspaper El Universo reported.

He had been deported to Ecuador from Paraguay last May under an international arrest warrant, and has been held in the hospital ever since.
