Students and lecturers from the Department of Mass Communication at the Lagos State Polytechnic, LASPOTECH, Ikorodu Main Campus defied the early morning rainfall on Wednesday, 17 September, 2014 to sensitize the school community on the deadly Ebola virus and how to safeguard themselves against it.

The campaign was flagged off with the convergence of all the students and lecturers of the department on the school’s main entrance.

Themed, “Ebola: Safety For One, Safety For All”, the campaign was not just an affair for students and lecturers alone, joined in the train were the  medical team of the polytechnic and a brigade which dished out  melodious tunes to entertain participants.

The students marched round the campus, distributing fliers containing essential information on the Ebola virus, displaying banners, pasting stickers at strategic points and simulating hand washing demonstrations at strategic locations within the school.

The medical team also gave brief lectures on how students can take precautionary measures against the disease.

Hand sanitizers were also donated at the Students’ Affairs building, Students’ Activity Centre and the Rector’s office.

The department stated that the aim of the campaign was  to equip the students with  adequate information about the Ebola virus, and  to engage its students in community action.

“The journey doesn’t end here, the department is committed to following up its actions by monitoring the expected changes from its community and constantly ‘ring the bells’ of maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” the department’s spokesman man added.

For the school authorities, the campaign was a welcome development.

According to the Deputy Rector Academics, Mr Tajudeen Nurudeen: “I was not expecting anything less from the Department of Mass Communication. I am sure this is the first of its kind in any tertiary institution of learning.

“It is a laudable effort to support the school management’s activities to sensitize the polytechnic community”.

He added that the Mass Communication department is the best department in the school and the first to initiate such humanitarian service in the school.
