Over 120 residents of Agenebode, administrative headquarters of Etsako East local government area of Edo State, have been empowered by President Goodluck Jonathan.
The beneficiaries were presented with bags of fertilizers, sewing machines, hair dryers, hand dryers and clippers, as part of dividends of democracy.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Youth and Student Matters, Comrade Jude Imagwe, who presented the gift on behalf of the president, appealed to the beneficiaries to support the re-election bid of Jonathan in 2015.
He also appealed the people of Agenebode to take active part in the ongoing continuous registration exercise to enable vote during general elections.
“I want to appeal to every one of us that the voter’s registration exercise will soon start; our strength is our voting right. If we cannot vote tomorrow we cannot equally measure or criticise the performance of government and the only reason that make us to vote is when we are registered.
“As we are approaching election, we should know that it is just an election for a day. We should not see ourselves as enemies. To everyday day there is a man and for every man there is day, so if you lose today you may win tomorrow,” he urged.
According to the former President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, (NANS), the only way to criticise and demand accountability from our political leaders is for everyone to participate in the voters registration exercise as a prelude to voting on election day.
He advised the youths to be weary of politicians whose stock in trade is to fuel political violence and urged Nigerians not allow themselves to be used as thugs before, during and after elections.
One the beneficiaries of the fertilizers, Momoh Sule, who lauded the gesture of President Jonathan, said, “We never thought that we could be remembered in this community,” he said while promising to make good use of the item.
